The A27 was closed while firefighters dealt with a tractor fire.
Police were called to the eastbound carriageway just east of the Tangmere roundabout yesterday afternoon.
At 5.23pm, Sussex Roads Policing Unit officer PC Tom Van Der Wee announced the force was dealing with an agricultural vehicle on fire.
Crews from Chichester Fire Station were called to put out the flames.
One lane had been reopened, however officers were forced to closed it again temporarily due to the tractor catching fire again.
Traffic remained heavy on the route before the road was fully reopened by 7pm.
