The University of Sussex is one of only three top universities in the UK to fully return to in-person learning.

Students starting a new academic year at the university this week will see the vast majority of their teaching return to campus, with some alternatives available for those unable to come to campus due to travel restrictions.

Sussex is joined only by Sheffield and Southampton in its approach, according to a study by the Times, with 24 of 27 universities surveyed opting for a combination of face-to-face and online learning.

A University of Sussex spokesman said: “Evidence shows that our students overwhelmingly want a return to in-person teaching, so we are determined to deliver this experience in the coming year.

“The health and safety of our students and staff is paramount, which is why we are focusing our efforts on boosting vaccination rates, including hosting pop-up vaccination clinics and running a prize draw with £5,000 prizes for ten double-jabbed students.”

Brighton University is aiming to maximise students’ time on campus, but most students will have some remote working. Meanwhile, Chichester University will continue to see busier lectures moved online, with social distancing still in force.

The decisions by universities on teaching comes amid pressure by students across the country to prioritise in-person learning and to have part of their tuition fees refunded.
