AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the cause of flooding in Heathfield last month.

Heavy rain in the town on July 25 saw a number of properties on Wren Close affected by floodwater.

East Sussex County Council has commissioned engineers to look into what happened and determine what measures can be taken to avoid a similar incident happening again.

The investigation will build on initial evidence gathered by the council’s flood risk management team, as well as Wealden District Council, East Sussex Highways and Southern Water.

Consultants will also speak to residents about their experience of the flooding.

In the aftermath of the flood, Heathfield homeowner Terry Arnold told ITV Meridian that a blocked culvert nearby to the road was to blame.

He claimed that the blockage had been reported two weeks before the flood, but nothing had been done.

An initial report is expected before the end of next month, with more detailed work into the event a possibility depending on its outcome.

Homes and roads across the South East of England saw flooding, with East Sussex Fire and Rescue called to Crowborough after reports of submerged roads.

London also saw flooding in the downpour last month, with two hospitals in the capital urging patients to find alternative treatment centres after “experiencing operational issues.”
