GLADIATORS returned to battle this weekend as fighting re-enactments took place at the largest Roman home in Britain.
The action took place on Saturday by re-enactment society Britannia, who worked on Ridley Scott’s film Gladiator, at Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens.
While there was no Spartacus in sight, the society fought it out in a thrilling display in a mock Roman amphitheatre.
The palace is one of the properties owned and cared for by Sussex Past, the trading name for Sussex Archaeological Society, which is also celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.
Despite there being no gladiator games at Fishbourne Palace historically, there were over 20 Roman amphitheatres in Britain - including one in Chichester.
The next event by Sussex Past is a medieval weekend at Michelham Priory, Hailsham, over the weekend on September 4 and 5.
