A PAINTER honoured the nation's Olympic team by painting rocks to represent each medal won.
Niki Munday, from Shoreham, is a member of the Shoreham Rocks UK club in which people paint stones in different styles and hide them so that when people find them, it hopefully makes them smile.
Over the last three years, she has painted stones with faces, country flags and Despicable Me minions but her favourite is her newest collection.
Niki has just finished painting a stone for every medal that Team GB won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The 51-year-old said: “I would watch the highlights and start painting the stones to represent the medals that Team GB had won.
“In total, I did 105 as I did not want people from the group events to be missed out. It took over a week to complete all of them.
“It is my favourite collection, to be honest as they are all personalised. The Olympics really gave a sense of togetherness while they were on, and painting the rocks allowed me to join in, in a way.”
The painted rocks will now be hidden around Shoreham. Niki said that sometimes she hides them in the park or on the beach as well as taking them on holiday to hide them abroad.
She said: “It is nice when you see pictures of the rocks posted onto the Facebook group as it means that you know they have had a positive effect on someone.
"I sometimes give them to my friends if they are going on holiday, and I have seen some of my painted rocks turn up all over the world, from Australia to Canada.
"I always put a message on the back of them saying Shoreham Rocks UK, if found post on Facebook and keep or re-hide.
“Of course, not all of them will be posted or found, and that is okay as I still get enjoyment out of painting them.”
During the lockdowns, Niki used the opportunity to spread cheer in the local neighbourhood by painting rocks and hiding them for children to find. The activity of hiding painted rocks was started by The Kindness Rocks Project.
