A BABY SEAL was caught on camera by a photographer on Monday.
Claire Andrews posted the pictures on the Argus Camera Club Facebook page with the caption “cuteness overload warning…” – and she definitely was not wrong.
There were a few concerns that the seal might be unwell, but it turned out it was just having a rest.
She said: “Having stayed with the rescuers helping keep people off of the beach yesterday it was decided that this is a young, not long weaned seal just having a rest.
“The rescuers stayed until last thing and we agreed to check early morning.
“We were a little concerned that it hadn't moved off when we got there but after a bit more rest, a big yawn and a last glance back at me, I watched it return to the sea. What a great start to the day."
Claire used a long range zoom lens to capture the fantastic images to avoid disturbing the resting pup.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which cares for all wildlife, says baby seals are well looked after by their mums.
According to the website: “Female grey seals are dedicated parents, spending several weeks feeding their pups and losing up-to 65kg in the process.
“The pups drink two and a half litres of milk every day and it's so rich pups can grow by as much as 30kg in two weeks."
After roughly a month, females leave their pups and head back out to sea where they feed and mate again.
The RSPB added: “The pups can spend up to two weeks all alone on the beach while they build up the courage and the right fur to take the plunge into the sea and learn to fish for themselves.”
