A MAN who served more than two decades in the Royal Navy has traded tools for toiletries in a new role at Brighton’s Metropole hotel.
Martin Rowe previously served as a chief engineer for 22 years onboard vessels such as HMS Ocean, Edinburgh and Westminster.
However, Martin sought a new role at the Hilton-owned hotel during the pandemic to be closer to home to utilise skills from his service, where he supervised the operation, maintenance and repair of ship’s equipment, tools and facilities.
He now uses this expertise towards quickly solving problems at the 340-room hotel on the city’s seafront.

Martin said: “It was difficult to decide what I wanted to do next after leaving the Navy, and I never thought I would end up working in hospitality - but since joining Hilton, I have not looked back.
“Every day I enjoy a fresh challenge using the skills I developed during my naval career, with the added bonus that I can be closer to my family.”
Martin also said there are surprising parallels between working in the Navy and at the hotel chain.
“We have similar planning processes and both workplaces really focus on camaraderie and unity,” he explained.
Martin’s new position is just one of nearly 1,000 new hirings made by Hilton across the UK since hospitality reopened to holidaymakers in England in May.
With the chain anticipating pent-up demand for staycations, Hilton are recruiting another 1,400 roles across Britain, with four new hotels set to open by the end of the year.
As part of their hiring, they have worked with a range of organisations, including the Armed Forces, to expand their staff and boast a more diverse team.
Julie Baker, Hilton vice-president of operations in the UK and Ireland, said: “Whether you’re looking for better flexibility, career progression or want to embrace something completely new, a career at Hilton can offer a real world of opportunity.
“Our team members sit at the very heart of our business, so we’re focussed on creating the best environment where our team members can truly thrive.”
