A PUB football team has lived out their wildest dream by lifting a trophy at the national football stadium.

The Victoria team, representing the namesake pub in Victoria Road, Portslade, lifted the BT Sport Pub Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The competition, dubbed the "greatest grassroots football competition of them all", was set up to give pub players the chance to live out their football fantasies.

Family and friends of the team were there to watch as the Victoria team beat The New Line team from Bradford 4-0.

Captain Owen Scerri, from Hove, was full of praise for his team's performance.

He said: "We dominated the whole game, the big pitch suited us perfectly.

"We loved to play with the ball on the floor and pass it around, I think our goalkeeper only had to make one save in the whole game.

"We were the better side on the day."

The whole team enjoyed the occasion as they were allowed to use all the facilities Wembley Stadium had to offer, not usually something the casual footballer is familiar with.

Owen led his team on the walk up to the Royal Box to lift the trophy, a path taken just 24 hours earlier by a Leicester City team who had just won the Community Shield, beating Manchester City.

The Victoria team were presented with their trophy by former England international star players Glenn Hoddle and Joe Cole.

Owen, 21, said: "We did the long walk up the stairs, which was really cool. Glenn Hoddle and Joe Cole handed us the trophy, which we lifted.

"Not many captains can say they have lifted a trophy, especially at Wembley. It is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

"We then headed back down to the pitch to celebrate more. No one from the team can believe that we had just won at Wembley.

"Afterwards, we headed back down to Portslade, where the brewery gave us a keg of beer, and we celebrated long into the night."

The Victoria football team qualified for the final at Wembley after they won a 32-team seven-a-side tournament at Bisham Abbey in Marlow, the former training ground for the England football team.
