A driver was taken to hospital with suspected serious injuries after being cut free from his BMW after it flipped on the A27.
His saloon car overturned during the incident near the junction with the A293 Hangleton Link at 7.55am yesterday.
The driver, a 37-year-old man from Brighton, was cut out of the vehicle before being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment.
A Mercedes Sprinter van also was left facing the wrong way following the incident which caused disruption on the roads.
Pictures taken from the scene show how rush-hour motorists came to a standstill as emergency services dealt with the crash.
Officers closed the westbound carriageway for more than three hours while paramedics dealt with the casualty and the vehicles were recovered.
A 42-year-old man from Goring was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of drugs, and possession of cannabis.
He has been released under investigation.
Investigating officer PC Steven Bucksey said: “We are appealing for witnesses to the collision.
“Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident should email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 204 of 09/08.”
