A YELLOW weather warning for wind is in place across much of Sussex and the South East of England ahead of the first named summer storm of the year.

Storm Evert is expected to bring unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of England and Wales this evening and into tomorrow.

The weather warning, covering the coastline from Chichester to Great Yarmouth, is in place from 6am tomorrow morning to 6pm tomorrow evening.

Gusts of up to 65mph can be expected across areas of the south coast, reaching 75mph in exposed areas of Cornwall.

A band of heavy rain from the storm is due to hit the region from around 3am, with windy weather potentially leading to travel disruption.

The Met Office warned that people in the region can expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected
  • Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges
  • Some short term loss of power and other services
  • Spray and/or large waves could affect coastal routes and sea fronts
  • Possible fallen trees and damage to temporary outdoor structures

The storm is the fourth named summer storm, following Francis and Ellen last year and Hector in 2018.
