A WILDLIFE rescuer says he felt "physically sick" after finding a duck struggling to breathe following a "horrific" incident.
Trevor Weeks MBE claims several young boys were with the severely injured mallard and fled the scene as he approached.
The bird, which was found unconscious with injuries to its neck and wing, died at the scene.
The incident, at Hellingly Country Park, has been reported to police and Mr Weeks is calling on any witnesses to come forward.
He said “Despite being involved in wildlife rescue for 35 years now, I felt physically sick after dealing with this duck.
"The suffering which this poor creature must have gone through is horrific. I don’t understand why anyone would do such a thing.
"I hope that someone comes forward with information to help prevent this from occurring again."
Mr Weeks was called to the beauty spot amid reports of an injured goose, arriving on Thursday, July 22, at around 3pm.
Mr Weeks, who was accompanied by Julie Stafford and Jack Ley, was met with a shocking sight.
They discovered a duck with a damaged neck, multiple fractures to one wing and possible crush injuries.
The group of rescuers dialled 999 and Sussex Police attended the scene.
Officers are now investigating the incident.
Mr Week's charity, East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service, is now appealing for information.
Anyone who can help is asked to contact Sussex Police via e-mail 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
