Weather: Torrential rain causes flash flooding across Sussex

Roads across Sussex became impassable as flash flooding caused by heavy rain caused travel delays.

Several roads were closed, including A272 at Newbridge, as West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service warned motorists from passing through the standing water.

Pictures shared on Twitter show cars wading through the rain water in Hastings, Peasmarsh, and Billingshurst last night.

Writing on Twitter, the fire service said: "There are reports of several roads across the county that have been affected by flooding tonight.

"Please do not drive into floodwater, it only takes a small amount of water to lose control of your vehicle.

"Take extra care!"

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain that was in place until midnight.

The forecaster warned that fast flowing or deep floodwater was possible, with delays or cancellations to train and bus services expected.

A spokesman from the Met Office said at the time: "A cloudy start but early rain or showers slowly easing, with some brighter spells developing.

"Further showers developing from late morning, these occasionally heavy and slow-moving, with a risk of hail, thunder and torrential downpours.

"Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.

"There are possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

Today, any remaining overnight showers should ease into a dry, bright and often sunny day.

In Brighton, some well-scattered and isolated sharp showers may develop through the afternoon.

Temperature are forecasted to reach a maximum of 23C.
