TORRENTIAL rain is set to drench the city this afternoon amid a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office.
The downpour is expected to cause flooding and travel disruption across Sussex with rain expected to last until midnight tonight.
Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings, the forecaster warned.
Fast flowing or deep floodwater is also possible, with delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible.
A spokesman from the Met Office said: "A cloudy start but early rain or showers slowly easing, with some brighter spells developing.
"Further showers developing from late morning, these occasionally heavy and slow-moving, with a risk of hail, thunder and torrential downpours.
"Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.
"There are possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."
By Tuesday, any remaining overnight showers should ease into a dry, bright and often sunny day.
Some well-scattered and isolated sharp showers may develop through the afternoon.
temperature are forecasted to reach a maximum of 23C.
