He was later found with the knife in Victoria Park, Brighton Magistrates’ Court heard.
The 31-year-old changed his plea to admit assault and possession of an offensive weapon in public.
It was the second time he was found in possession of a blade in public.
Magistrate Rosalind Buchan jailed Wallis for six months.
The court noted it was an “assault in a domestic setting” which “included a grab to the victim’s throat”.
Wallis, of Somerhill Avenue, Hove, was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to the victim, who The Argus is choosing not to name.
He must also pay £85 court costs.
