A CONTROVERSIAL columnist has been sacked for a tweet she published soon after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their daughter.

Brighton-based writer Julie Burchill took to social media to confirm that she has been fired from her role at The Telegraph.

In a statement Julie, 61, wrote: “It’s been a lovely five years, and I’ll always be grateful to them for ending my wilderness years.

“However, I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t often moaned to my husband recently about them always rejecting my 'edgy' column ideas and giving me more pedestrian ones which I’ve done splendidly anyway, I hope you can see my archive here. Onwards and upwards!”

After Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced the arrival of their second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten Windsor, Julie tweeted: “What a missed opportunity! They could’ve called it Georgina Floydina!”

The prolific writer also shared a tweet written by an account named Winston’s Supporter which read: “Proud parents Harry and Megan announce their new baby Georgina Floydina has signed up to its first Netflix deal.”

Julie’s Twitter account has now been deactivated.

Last year, Meghan spoke out over the death of George Floyd in a virtual address to graduating students at her former high school in Los Angeles, California.

Megan spoke about George Floyd and other victims of police brutality after the 46-year-old black man’s death at the hands of a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, who was later found guilty of murder.

Earlier this year, Julie was forced to issue a grovelling apology following a campaign of racist abuse towards journalist Ash Sarkar.

Julie agreed to pay “substantial damages” to Ash Sarkar and issued a statement on her Twitter page about the “defamatory comments”.

Julie alleged that Ms Sarkar “worshipped the Prophet Muhammad, worshipped a paedophile (referring to the Prophet Muhammad), that she was an Islamist, and that she was a hypocrite”.

But following a claim for defamation, Ms Burchill issued an apology.
