EMERGENCY services were called to the scene of an "awful" crash involving a "young baby" on a residential street yesterday.

Ambulance and fire crews were pictured in Portland Avenue attending the incident which saw a car flipped on its side.

Passerbys told The Argus that one of the vehicles in the collision contained a "baby", who was retrieved seemingly "uninjured" from crash.

The driver of the flipped car was cut from the vehicle after being trapped, they claimed.

Pictures taken from the scene show crews working to remove debris from the road, while the car remains on its side.

A resident told The Argus: "By the time neighbours rushed out some builders were already on the scene.

"I wasn’t even sure which way the cars were going because the guy was parking up his car out of the way as he had his young baby inside and the other car was flipped on it’s side.

"I found the whole thing awful.

"We’ve had a lot of accidents on this junction and we the neighbours have asked for action on speed."

A second neighbour said: "This is a spot where there are regular accidents as inadequate road markings coming out of Woodhouse Road and cars frequently speed down Portland Avenue far in excess of the 20 mph limit.

"Brighton and Hove City Council seem reluctant to do anything."

Sussex Police have been contacted for comment.
