BRIGHTON and Hove has recorded its highest daily coronavirus case rise since March.
In the 24 hours before 9am this morning, 22 people tested positive for the disease, according to figures published on the government's website.
The last time this number was reported in a single day was on March 21.
The total is still far below the January peak, which happened on the 4th of that month.
On that day, 437 people tested positive for coronavirus.
This comes after the city council warned cases in Brighton and Hove had risen by more than 70 per cent over the last week.
In the seven days up to Friday, May 28, 56 new cases were confirmed in the city, which is a 71 per cent increase on the previous week.
Head of Public Health Intelligence in the city Kate Gilchrist said people should not be too alarmed by the percentage rise.
She said: "In the past few weeks, overall rates have been relatively low, so when seen as a percentage, even a modest rise in cases looks like a sharp rise.
“We can expect to see numbers vary each week as we ease out of lockdown. But even so, we need to remain alert because every new case reported shows the virus is still circulating.
“The biggest number of reported cases was among young people and young adults who have not yet been vaccinated."
