A CONSERVATIVE MP is delighted with her town's recognition as one of the most tranquil in the UK.
According to a study by Delamere Health, Lewes has ranked eighth in the UK. The town finished ahead of Barnard Castle, Durham and Wadebridge, Cornwall.
The most tranquil town was North Berwick in Scotland, followed by Ilkley, Yorkshire and Woodbridge, Suffolk.
The study ranked the list of popular UK towns based on ten different factors to give a final score out of 100. Lewes scored 47 points, only ten less than North Berwick in first.
Tranquillity was judged by the number of cafes, spas, population, green space, beaches, walking trails, libraries, museums, crime and nightlife.
Conservative Lewes MP Maria Caulfield said: "Lewes is an exceptional place, with so much history and tradition from places you can visit such as the Priory to Anne of Cleves House.
"Surrounded by the South Downs and with the River Ouse running through the town, there are many peaceful spots to recharge the batteries.
"With a stroll up to Mount Caburn or a walk to Mount Harry and the Old Lewes Racecourse, you can see truly breathtaking scenery, which is food for the soul."
Towns within the study ranked highly for the least amount of nightlife and crime.
