A SCHOOL club is taking part in a beach clean as part of a monthly community programme.
The Eco Club at Deepdene School in Church Road, Hove, has committed to do a beach clean on Friday. They are being supported by Brighton and Hove City Council which has lent them a set of litter pickers.
Meeting once a week, the club tries to do something once a month to benefit the community. They even continued meetings during lockdown via Zoom.
This enabled them to continue their community work away from school, hear from guest speakers and make bug hotels in their gardens.
This month they decided on the beach clean and they will be very visible in their school blazers and high-vis jackets. The clean will be done by a group of 23 children from Years 2, 3, 4 and 6.
The children wanted to do the beach clean because they have seen how much litter is dropped on it during their "Teach on the Beach" lessons.
The pupils will spend an hour on the beach from 1.45pm to 2.45pm. They will be cleaning near the Lagoon behind Hove beach.
Headteacher Tracey Hayward has run the club for the last year. She said: “The children are passionate about caring for their environment and the children volunteered to attend the beach clean.”
