WINDS of up to 60mph are set to batter the coast tonight, as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for two days.

The warning issued by forecasters begins at 6.00pm this evening and is set to remain in place until 9.00pm tomorrow.

Strong winds are expected to cause delays across Sussex, with gusts of 60mph expected to hit Brighton and Hove.

The seafront is will be impacted by sea spray, while damage to outdoor structures is also possible, the Met Office has warned.

Downed trees, along with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are also likely.

Ahead of the warning, a spokesman from the Met Office said: "Windy weather may lead to some travel disruption and, perhaps, damage to temporary outdoor structures.

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and or large waves.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges is also likely.

"It is probable that some bus and train services will be affected, with some journeys taking longer.

"Inland, gusts up to 45 to 50 mph are expected at times whilst over coasts and hills gusts will reach as much as 55 to 60 mph.

"These high winds then slowly ease from the west later on Friday."

The two-day warning is in place across Sussex and the south coast, stretching from Southend-on-sea to Hugh Town.
