THE ARGUS coverage of the "Hands off Moulsecoomb Primary" march reflected the passion and vitality of the campaigners.

It did however overlook another aspect of that demonstration which was the campaign to Save One World Nursery.

This exemplary early years setting which serves students, staff and the local community is threatened with closure by the University of Brighton citing financial losses but missing the point that high-quality childcare and education is a social good  and a necessity for equality of access to higher education.

The actual monetary figures are tiny in comparison to many areas of university budget (and dwarfed by the scale of the vice-chancellor's personal pay packet) and also skewed by Covid.

This also marks the University of Brighton turning its back on a direct benefit for the community that has had to live in the shadow of the Lewes road construction site for years now as well as witnessing student lettings gobbling up housing availability. 

The decision to close a highly regarded setting, sack 11 members of staff and turn their back on the community can only do serious reputational damage to the university.

One of the chants on Saturday's march that was particularly well received was "Shame on Brighton University: Save One World Nursery".
