Aldi is planning a huge new store in Hove

The budget chain now reportedly owns the Court Farm site at the roundabout junction with the A27 at the top of King George VI Avenue.

Aldi now wants to build a new supermarket at the site to serve Hove residents and traffic off the A27.

The store plans to open between 8am and 10pm on Monday to Saturday, and operate with reduced hours of 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Aldi aims to build between 110-120 car parking spaces, build 12 electric vehicle charging points, install 26 new cycle spaces, and generate 50 new jobs.

“We have long wanted to expand the offer of its amazing value and choice to residents of Hove, Withdean and Hangleton,” a spokesman for Aldi said.

“And the site next to Toad’s Hole Valley development is the ideal location.”

A website for the development will go live on Monday and representatives for the company will be posting 4,000 leaflets to residents, it is reported.

Councillor Samer Bagaeen, who represents Hove Park, said: “Two weeks ago, myself and Cllr Brown got an email from Aldi who now own the Court Farm site.

“We asked to meet them immediately and did so in a virtual meeting at the end of last week. We also contacted officers straight away as the email from Aldi came out of the blue.

“We’ve been advised that that the proposed store will be primarily designed to serve Hove but will take trade from the rural hinterland off the A27.

“There is no planning application yet but one will go in subject to the consultation.

“Aldi is aiming for the building to be BREEAM excellent in design terms, will have a wild meadow green roof, and a detailed travel plan and full transport impact assessment will be submitted.

“Obviously, the holding objection from Highways England on the A27 junction for the Toads Hole Valley development remains in place.”

Cllr Bagaeen said Aldi expect two or three deliveries per day every day, with four per day in busier times at Christmas.

Deliveries will start “ideally” from about 5am. Delivery trucks will come in off the A27 and then leave off the A27.

“Aldi has confirmed that it takes around 40-45 mins to unload,” Cllr Bagaeen added.

Plans for Toad's Hole Valley

A £300 million plan for almost 900 homes at the Toad's Hole Valley site was revealed in late-2018.

The plans included proposals for shops a new secondary school and:

• A community centre including a cafe which developers say will be the “heart of the new community”.
• Land for a new secondary school, up to three-storeys high, with a grass roof. The school’s sports facilities would be available for the community to use outside of school opening hours.
• A “neighbourhood centre” with space for shops including a chemist, hairdresser, optician, cafes, and estate agents.
