WORTHING has been named as the worst seaside town in Sussex.

More than 4,000 visitors took part in the survey that ranked seaside destinations across the UK from best to worst.

Destinations were rated on their beaches, attractions, value for money, peace and quiet, and scenery in the Which? study.

Unfortunately for Worthing, its long coastline and the picturesque beach was deemed the worst in the county.

Visitors scored the seaside town the sixth-worst in the country, with an overall customer score of 58%.

The average hotel rate will set you back £78 per night and the town's attractions were rated one star.

Elsewhere in the county, Littlehampton scored a customer rating of 62%, while Hastings ranked slightly higher at 65%.

Brighton scored 70%, but was given two stars in value for money.

Eastbourne faired better, with a four-star rating in the same category.

However, the best seaside town in Sussex is Rye, which scored an overall customer satisfaction score of 81%.

Top of the pile, however, was Bamburgh in Northumberland. It won visitors over with its stunning scenery, beach and peaceful surroundings.

A spokesman from Which? said: "More than 4,061 visitors told us about their recent UK trips to seaside towns, villages and resorts. Destinations were rated on their beaches, attractions, value for money, peace and quiet, and scenery.

"Thirty of the nearly 100 British destinations were awarded four or five stars for peace and quiet.

"This will be especially valuable this year given that uncertainty over foreign trips has seen a booking boom in domestic breaks.

"Perhaps this is one reason lesser-known spots such as Beer in Devon and Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands have risen up our rankings, replacing old but overrun favourites in Cornwall."
