A POLICE officer has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Police Constable Louie Wellfare, 28, was in a marked Sussex Police car when it crashed into a man walking in Bear Road, Brighton.
The man, named by his family as Andy Gunn, sustained serious leg injuries and was taken to hospital.
The incident on July 17, 2019, was investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Last year, the IOPC passed on evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service and PC Wellfare has now been charged.
He is due to appear at at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
An IOPC spokesman said: “Our investigation began in July 2019 and concluded in March 2020.
“In April 2020 we referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
“The officer was notified of the CPS’ charging decision on 25 March 2021.”
