A GROUP of travellers have left a popular beauty spot days after a council ordered them to vacate.

As many as twelve caravans were served with notices ordering them to leave the camp at Goring Gap.

A court hearing had been booked for Wednesday, April 28, to grant an order to remove the group, but that will no longer go ahead.

The Argus understands that they left under their own volition.

It comes after pictures taken from the site last weekend showed the caravans and other vehicles parked at the popular beauty spot, which sees thousands of visitors each summer.

West Sussex County Council sought a court order to remove the group and the date was booked for today.

Previously, a spokesman said: "There are currently 12 caravans parked at this location.

"All have been served with notices requiring them to vacate the land. A court hearing has been booked for Wednesday 28 April.

"Should the order for removal be granted, it will be enforced should the travellers fail to vacate of their own accord.

"We will continue to monitor the site together with Sussex Police."

It comes after a group of travellers were seen to set up camp in Stanmer Park, Brighton last month.

As many as six caravans and other assorted vehicles were pictured parked in Stanmer Park, which is near the University of Sussex.
