IMMACULATELY turned out firefighters stand to attention for an inspection by the “top brass”.
This Argus archive picture was taken at Hove Fire Station in about 1953 and is a great snapshot of the time.
This picture was probably taken on the same day – it must be some kind of open day at the fire station as the crowd are clearly admiring the gleaming fire engine.

Our last picture today shows a calamity in Surrey Street, Brighton, near the railway station.
The Nicholls and Co truck has overturned, spilling its contents all over the road. Shopworkers and passersby have gathered to look.
The picture was taken in about 1948 at a time when Nicholls and Co was the go-to haulage company in the area.
Hopefully its reputation was not too damaged by the incident.
