PEOPLE from across the city are expected to gather in Brighton today ahead of a protest against a controversial bill.

Hundreds will march through the city in a public display of opposition to the government's new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill.

The demonstration which is set to take place at 2pm in The Level, follows weeks of protesting against the legislation.

The controversial bill looks to increase the maximum penalty for criminal damage of less than £5,000 to a memorial from three months to ten years’ imprisonment, the same maximum sentence for non-sexual child abuse.

It would also grant police additional powers to restrict protests by imposing start and finish times and setting noise limits.

These limitations could be applied to a protest involving a single person.

Writing on Twitter, organisers Anti-Nazi Action League said: "This Saturday, come out and make some noise.

"Wear a mask, maintain social distance.

"Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill give the police more powers to abuse.

"What we are going to do about it?"

According to the coronavirus guidance issued by the government, protests can go ahead “where the organiser has taken the required precautions, including the completion of a risk assessment.”

Before the rule change, organisers of gatherings involving more than 30 people faced £10,000 fines.

Some travel disruption is expected as protesters march through the city.

Writing on Twitter ahead, a spokesman for Brighton and Hove Buses said: "We're aware of a possible protest due to take place in Brighton tomorrow, between 14:00 - 18:00, starting from The Level.

"At this stage, we cannot confirm details of the route nor how this will affect services.
