A UNIVERSITY has been included among the best in the world for helping provide global sustainability.
The University of Sussex has ranked 41st in the newly published Times higher education world impact rankings for 2021. This is the first time the university has ever been included in the list and it has beaten more than 1,000 institutions from around the world.
The ranking was based on the delivering on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also the university’s own commitment to sustainability, and how students are recruited, plus the governing and running of the university. The university achieved a score of 90.3 out of 100.
Vice-chancellor Adam Tickell said: “The sustainable development goals are an urgent call to action and our best hope for a global response to the existential issues our planet faces.
“Delivering on the SDGs is critical if we are to make this a better world for all, which is why we are placing the SDGs at the very heart of our emerging sustainability strategy.
“This ranking is a welcome reminder of how much progress we’ve already made and heartening evidence that we are ready to lead the way in global higher education.”
The Times higher education impact rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the sustainable development goals. The rankings are calculated by comparing four areas... research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.
The university was also judged to be performing best against the SDG of no poverty. Sussex itself was ranked tenth in the world. Sussex also scored well against the SDG of sustainable cities and communities, ranking 26th in the world.
The county also ranks 31st for partnership for the goals and 41st for peace, justice and strong institutions. Sussex is ranked in the top-10 for anti-poverty work.
