Driving tests have resumed across England and Wales today after being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The wait is finally over for learner drivers across the country as driving tests have been given the green light today, 22 April, after being postponed for four months.
However, getting a test slot is like gold dust with drivers reportedly waiting hours on the government website trying to book.

Those who are lucky enough to get a test need to be aware of some changes to the rules in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Here's everything you need to know about the current driving test rules:
How to book a test:
The booking site for driving tests is back up and running after being stalled during lockdown - the site is open from 6am to 11.40pm.
You can book a test for yourself or alternatively your instructor can book a test for you.
You will need your UK driving licence number, credit card and driving instructor’’s personal reference number before you book a test.
You can book a test for up to 18 weeks in the future, and there is no waiting list or cancellation list.
If you're looking to book your driving test visit: www.gov.uk/book-driving-test.
Here's what you need to know if you're taking your driving test (PA)
Do you need to wear a face covering?
Yes, you must wear a face covering unless you are exempt.
Drivers will need to say if there’s a good reason they cannot wear a face covering when taking their test.
Exemptions include:
- you have a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability that means you cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering
- putting on, wearing or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress
- you need to remove it during your test to avoid harm or injury or the risk of harm or injury to yourself or others
The government have stated that wearing glasses does not count as a reason to not wear a face covering.
If you cannot wear a mask you might not be able to take a test at your prefered test centre.
Do you need to take a covid test?
The government is asking all learner drivers to take a rapid flow test (free and available at pharmacies) before their driving test.
A rapid flow test is free and can be taken up to four days before your driving exam and you don't need to be showing any symptoms.
However, it is not mandatory to take a coronavirus test before your driving test and you will be allowed to drive without one.
Do windows have to be open?
Yes. As part of the new guidance anyone taking part in a driving test must have one window on either side of the car open (e.g drivers window and rear passenger or any combination).
Additionally, surfaces must be cleaned and wiped down before your test - the examiner will also wipe down surfaces when entering the vehicle.
Extra checks you need to know:
Drivers are asked not to arrive at the test centre more than five minutes before your exam.
Most waiting rooms within the test centres will be closed, however toilets remain open on request.
Driving examiners will wear face coverings, but they may also choose to wear gloves and use disposable seat covers.
When you must not go to your test:
Do not go to your driving test if:
- you or someone you live with has COVID-19 symptoms
- you’ve been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace or the NHS COVID-19 app
- you’re quarantining because you recently entered the UK
Change your test appointment or cancel your test if you’re not able to go.
