BRIGHTON'S first food hall will finally open its doors on Monday after more than five years of development.

Restoration of Shelter Hall on the seafront first began in October 2015.

Last summer saw the opening of its pop-up food market, Shelter Hall Raw, but now food lovers will be able to dine and enjoy live music outside the newly restored Victorian building, with indoor dining from May 17.

More than 2,500 bookings have already been made, and visitors can either reserve a table online or turn up and book in person, as walk-in spaces will be available.

Showcasing food and drink by local restaurants and suppliers, the food hall aims to champion the best produce Sussex has to offer.

Pan by Lost Boys Chicken, Caught by Crabshack and Amalfi by VIP Pizza are just some of the food businesses based there.

Tart by Sugardough will be providing freshly made pastries and artisan coffees, while there will be a selection of vibrant salads and juices at Zest by Hanoi Kitchen.

MasterChef winner Kenny Tutt is launching his first Brighton venture at Shelter Hall, with Ox Block - a robata grill serving up seasonal barbecued meats, from steaks and kebabs to breakfast baps.

There will be music from live DJs throughout Shelter Hall's opening weekend beginning next Friday, April 30, with performances from Clementine, Jaztec, DJ sad act and former chef MC Cashback.

The hall will also host weekly live music sessions on Sundays, and the first session will see Linus De Ferrari, Alice Flower, Madaliso and Scarlett Fae take to the stage, with DJ sets from Brighton favourites Riphco, Fono and Suze Rosser.

Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas said the food hall will play a part in the city's recovery from the pandemic, as a key tourist attraction on the seafront.

She said: "Many people have already visited the pop up Shelter Hall Raw over the summer but with the final refurbishments nearly complete I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.

"Tourism is vital to Brighton's recovery as we come out of this pandemic and projects such as Shelter Hall, on this busy section of Brighton Seafront, will act as a showcase from our city's vibrant independent food and drink sector, bringing much loved businesses from across the city to the beach."

Shelter Hall will be open Monday to Sunday from 8am to 12am.
