Sussex beauty spots have been named among the top beaches near London.

The accolades were awarded by media brand Time Out as it named ten "brilliant beaches" which would take less than two hours to get to from the capital.

The company compiled its list ahead of April 12, when a further loosening of lockdown rules will allow Brits to stay in self-contained accommodation such as holiday lets.

And Sussex sites occupied four of the ten slots available.

The first to be recognised was Camber Sands.

"Four miles from Rye in East Sussex, the impressive dunes system that makes Camber Sands the south coast’s most Arabian-looking beach destination is filled with wonders, from the marram grasses and pretty chestnut fences that help keep the sands from shifting to the Kit Kat Café, perfect for watching kitesurfers on the water and horseback riders along its edge," Time Out wrote.

Camber is about a two-hour drive from London, while a combination of walking, trains and buses can take visitors from London St Pancras to the Sussex seaside town in about one hour 40 minutes.

Next to feature on the list was West Wittering, noted for its "shabby-chic beach huts" and "huge Blue Flag beach".

Time Out said the beach was great for all sorts of activities including safe swimming, sunbathing and more, while the nearby South Downs offered an inland alternative to keen ramblers.

The company then urged would-be holiday-makers to divert their eyes back to the east of the county, this time focusing on Holywell Retreat in Eastbourne.

"It’s a laidback, peaceful little shingle beach that has some pretty blue and white beach chalets on it, backed by the gorgeous white cliffs of Beachy Head," Time Out said.

The final entry from Sussex was East Beach in Littlehampton, which drew praise for its "faded prom and an old-school funfair" which gave the area a "ramshackle air that’s stopped it becoming too hip".
