AN exciting new children’s playground costing £60,000 will be built later this month.
It will be at Barn Rise, Westdene, and incorporate a main park, toddler’s area and quiet corner with more than 20 play features including climbing frames, swings, slides, net and plank bridges, a fireman’s pole and a spinning wheel.
The park will also have improved access and play equipment for children with disabilities.
The work is due to begin on March 29 and take around four weeks to complete.
Part of the funding came from the My First Friends Nursery, where the playground is based. It raised £9,000 towards the project from local businesses and nearby residents.
The rest was paid for by City Parks, the council’s parks and open spaces department.
Demita Harman, deputy manager at My First Friends Nursery, said: “The nursery has been fundraising for the last three years and has raised £9,000 to help towards the community side of the playground redevelopment.
“We would like to thank everyone who donated money and time, including local shops, local councillors, Sussex Police, local Westdene residents and of course the city council.
"The playground will look amazing and it will finally be safe and inclusive for all ages.”
Councillor Jamie Lloyd, chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee and Withdean ward councillor, said: “This play park is going to be a fantastic addition to Westdene.
“Special thanks must be given to the staff at My First Friends Nursery. Without their collaboration and assistance, this project would not have been possible.”
Playground manufacturer Kompan was chosen to supply and build the park after winning a tendering process.
