A NEW detective drama is being celebrated as a big boost for the city.
ITV’s Grace was filmed in Brighton and Hove last year with city landmarks – including Brighton Palace Pier and the i360 – playing a starring role in the adaptation.
People from across the city have expressed their “pride” in the city, as viewers across the country tuned in to watch the first instalment of the crime series.
Anne Ackord, chief executive of the Brighton Pier Group, praised the drama for how it portrayed Brighton on screen.
She said: “At a time when we are preparing to come out of lockdown and open our city up again, it was a great boost to see the city and the pier presented in such a positive light.
“A prime time TV programme of such high calibre and based on the work of the marvellous Brightonian, Peter James, can only be a good for us all.”
Grace is based on crime novelist Peter James' book Dead Simple.
Actor John Simm, who has also appeared on Doctor Who and Life on Mars, played troubled detective Roy Grace.
Conservative councillor Dawn Barnett, who is an avid fan of Peter James’s novels, said she thought the adaptation was “fantastic.”
She told The Argus: “What they showed was great, it was well worth watching.
“The whole film was great. I was absolutely enthralled with it. It took a little while to get going but once it did it was wonderful.
“All of the Peter’s novels are really great and they’re all about Brighton. You can read his books and they take you all around Brighton.
“They talk about Langdale Gardens, they talk about George Street and you can place it all.
“I can’t wait for the next one.”
Dawn also suggested that Peter James’s novel The House on Cold Hill should be adapted next.
The second instalment is due to follow later this year, with a release date to be confirmed.
