A PAEDOPHILE spared a jail spell was back online exposing himself despite being banned from chat apps.

Barry Borthwick had admitted possessing disgusting images of child sex abuse in Lancing.

The 50-year-old was given a suspended sentence and put under the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

It was supposed to stop his access to online chat apps like Snapchat and Kik without getting prior permission from a police handler.

But just weeks later Borthwick was on Snapchat talking with adults and exposing his genitals, in breach of the order.

At Hove Crown Court he admitted breaching the suspended sentence order and the sexual harm order.

He was jailed for a year.

The suspended sentence was imposed when Borthwick was found with 15 category A images depicting the worst kind of child sex abuse in 2019.

He also had 21 category B images showing child sex and 15 category C images.

Richard Cherrill, prosecuting, said some of the images showed the “horrendous exploitation of children” including rape.

Some of the children shown in the images were estimated to be as young as five years old.

His Honour Judge Jeremy Gold QC said Borthwick was barred from using chat sites and apps like Snapchat and Kik.

Borthwick got his suspended sentence in October last year but was back using the chat apps, though only with adults, in December.

The judge said: “He was messaging people on the apps, sharing photographs, the majority of which showed him nude with close ups of his penis.”

Borthwick’s defence team argued that the orders to address his crimes and attempts to rehabilitate him had yet to kick in by December 2021.

But Judge Gold QC told Borthwick: “You were given a golden opportunity when you were given a suspended sentence back in the autumn last year, yet here we are.

“You had precious little regard for the sexual harm prevention order.

“I bear in mind you are a relatively isolated individual, but you knew perfectly well what the consequences would be.

“Those consequences are now coming home to roost. I bring the suspended sentence into operation.”

Borthwick, of Ingleside Crescent, Lancing, is now behind bars.
