THIS brilliant picture shows East Street in Brighton in 1953 – note the decorations for the Queen’s coronation.
It is instantly recognisable, though of course many things have changed. There was no taxi rank in those days and the cars – so much more appealing then – could drive along at will. Mind you, no one seems to be taking much notice of the “no waiting” signs.

Our other Argus archive pictures today are also familiar, though they were taken some 70 years ago.
They show Shoreham Harbour in the Fifties though there is debate over whether it’s Shoreham B power station being built or the gas works.
The general consensus is that the place smelt bad anyway.
