It has certainly changed a lot since this fantastic Argus archive picture was taken, thought to be in about 1950. Look closely to see the horse-drawn carriage.
The people marching through Brighton are thought to be members of the Co-operative Party being led by political activist Bessie Braddock. It is thought to be in the early Fifties.
Bessie was the centre of the well-known alleged exchange with Winston Churchill. It is said she accused him of being drunk and he replied: “Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.”

Our last picture shows a circus elephant. The date is unknown but there were several regular circuses that visited Brighton in the 1950s and 1960s and the train would deliver animals to Brighton Station, followed by a short walk to The Level, Preston Park or The Hippodrome.
