A WOMAN was taken to hospital with "potentially serious injuries" after falling from a bridge.
Emergency services were called to Denton Island, Newhaven, last night after reports of a woman "in distress".
She was seen to fall from the bridge onto the River Ouse bed below, which was at low tide.
Paramedics attended the scene and the woman was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
The fire service and several police cars were also in attendance.
Sussex Police said: "Police attended Denton Island, near Newhaven, on Wednesday evening due to concerns for the welfare of a woman in distress on a bridge.
"The woman was seen to fall from the bridge to the ground below.
"She has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with potentially serious injuries."
