THERE were dramatic scenes as fire broke out in Hanningtons in 1929. It wasn’t the shop in the middle of Brighton though, this was the furniture store at the bottom of Montefiore Road at the west corner with Davigdor Road in Hove. The building is now the Montefiore Hospital.

Another Argus archive picture today shows Pyecombe Garage, Brighton, looking north from the Pylons on the London Road (A23) in about 1936. It has changed beyond all recognition now.
Also rather different today is Portland Road in Hove. This picture, thought to be about 1937, shows a church next to the old Clarendon Laundry. We think the church is now Hopscotch Nursery.
Our last shot shows people sitting on Trundle Hill – the best place to get a free view of the races at Goodwood. This was in about 1936.
