WE’RE hoping readers might be able to shed some light on what is a mystery picture from The Argus archive.
It shows today’s a crowd of people gathered to watch something – but what? And where are they? Guesses so far include Hastings, Brighton and Worthing. The suggested date is 1942 but it could be older.

The picture of Stanmer village is also dated 1942 and could be older as during the Second World War some of the houses were taken over by the Canadian army with the locals moving out.
The scenery has not changed much, though.

Another picture shows the site of the King Alfred just before it was built on Hove seafront.

Preston Park in 1942 doesn’t look too different either. This is thought to be the start of allotments being put in place as part of the “dig for victory” campaign.
