The M23 is closed while police carry out accident investigation work following a crash.
The motorway is shut at Burstow, near Gatwick, with slow traffic in the area as a result of the closure.
A Highways England spokesman said: "The M23 in Surrey is closed southbound between Junction 8 and Junction 9 near Gatwick Airport due to a police-led incident.
"Surrey Police investigation works are being carried out. The closure is likely to remain in place throughout this morning.
"Road-users are advised to follow the hollow yellow diamond diversion symbol and exit the M25 at Junction 6 (Godstone) on to the south bound carriageway of the A22 where it will continue until the junction with the A264 at Felbridge.
"Turn west on to the A264 and travel on this until J10 of the M23 where road users can resume their journey. "
