RAILWAY lines ave been closed after a person was hit by a train.

Emergency services have been called to the incident, which happened at about 12.30pm between Brighton and Haywards Heath.

Mid Sussex Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Darren Taylor posted an update on social media at 12.40pm.

He said: "Our team is responding to an incident at Wivelsfield Railway Station at the moment, to support our British Transport Police colleagues.

"Early reports suggest a person has been struck by a train so please bear in mind if attending the station or looking to catch a train."

Southern Railway have since confirmed these reports.

A spokesman for the company said: "A person has been hit by a train between Haywards Heath and Brighton/Lewes, resulting in all lines being closed.

"Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 4pm."

Southern Rail is advising passengers to "delay travelling until later if possible, or allow plenty of extra time to complete your journey".

The rail company provided a service update shortly after 1pm.

"All lines remain closed between Haywards Heath and Brighton/Lewes/Hove," a spokesman said.

"Services also remain unable to run between Three Bridges and Brighton/Lewes/Hove.

"We have rail replacement buses en-route to the following stations; Three Bridges, Haywards Heath, Brighton and Lewes

"They're expected to start arriving from 1.20pm onwards."

Update

Lines have now reopened after a person was hit by a train between Haywards Heath and Brighton.

Trains running between Haywards Heath and Brighton/Lewes may still be cancelled, delayed or revised while services recover.

Disruption is expected to continue until 5.30pm.
