Water has been seen spraying "15 feet into the air" from a road in Hove.
Jets of water began shooting into the air in Sackville Road at about 9am this morning.
There are ongoing roadworks nearby with temporary plastic fencing set up around the area.
At 9.30am, a passerby told The Argus the water was shooting "about 15 feet into the air" and had been continually spraying from the road "for about 30 minutes now".
"The workmen are aware of it but don’t seem to be doing anything, just carrying on with other stuff," they said.
Southern Water have been informed of the incident.
A spokesman for the water company said: "We were on site at Sackville Trading Industrial Estate to remove an old pipe on behalf of the estate owner.
"The pipe in question was an old fire main which fed a building so had no testing valves.
"A very small cut was made at approximately 9am.
"The water remaining in the redundant fire system then escaped.
"The pipe was fully isolated by 10.15am and can now be removed."
