WITHDEAN Stadium holds lots of memories for many people, but few may know it was built in 1930 as a tennis stadium.
It eventually became an athletics stadium, having been converted from a zoo. And, of course, between 1999 and 2011 it was the home of Brighton and Hove Albion after the loss of the Goldstone Ground and a short trip to Gillingham, Kent.
Two more Brighton treasures feature in our archive pictures today, one of which is still with us. The Mazda fountain in Victoria Gardens was given to the town in 1930 by Thomson-Houston Ltd following an exhibition. The company was a big name in sound systems in British cinemas.

Finally we have a picture of one of Brighton’s best known shops in the Thirties. Plummers was on the corner of Western Road and Montpelier Road, opposite what is now Waitrose. It later became Debenhams.
