WHAT a great picture of Preston Circus in about 1929 – it is instantly recognisable.
Note the lack of traffic, which meant people could safely walk in the road.
The rest of our Argus archive pictures today tell a different story of Brighton, however.
Devonshire Street, pictured in about 1935, has long since been demolished. We are told that where the policeman is standing is now the redeveloped Brighton Boys Club in Edward Street.
Mount Pleasant in Brighton is pictured in about 1936, before the council houses were built on the east side.
The houses on the left lasted until the 1950s.
And the old houses in Claremont Row, pictured in about 1932, were demolished and replaced by prefabs.
The street just showing at the front was Sussex Street.
