THIS picture of a beauty contest on what we think is Worthing Pier in about 1936 is a fantastic portrait of social history depicting fashions of a bygone era.
Our second – rather different – photograph of women on the seafront is thought to be Lancing, though some readers may know otherwise. It is dated around 1938.
Comedian Tommy Trinder is pictured outside the Brighton Hippodrome in that year.
Tommy, whose catchphrase was “you lucky people”, regularly played the Palace Pier. He later lived in Saltdean.
Our final photo from the Argus archive today shows the Drill Hall in Spring Gardens in about 1937. It was the headquarters of 1st Volunteer Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment.
Spring Gardens was also the home of Southern Publishing – The Argus – before the presses moved to Robert Street, Brighton.
These great pictures have been colourised at www.spcolourcollection.com
