THE junction near the White Horse in Rottingdean looked very different in the 1930s.

This great picture, dated around 1938, shows a policeman directing traffic, though it seems barely worth it for just one car, in this case a Singer Junior.

We like the officer’s outfit – we are told Brighton policeman wore white helmets every summer until 1968. Hove police did not.

We also love the Thirties’ fashions sported by the people boarding the number 4 bus to Southwick. They all seem laden with parcels – had they all just been shopping or were they going on some sort of outing?
