THE junction near the White Horse in Rottingdean looked very different in the 1930s.
This great picture, dated around 1938, shows a policeman directing traffic, though it seems barely worth it for just one car, in this case a Singer Junior.
We like the officer’s outfit – we are told Brighton policeman wore white helmets every summer until 1968. Hove police did not.
We also love the Thirties’ fashions sported by the people boarding the number 4 bus to Southwick. They all seem laden with parcels – had they all just been shopping or were they going on some sort of outing?
Check out the rolls of newsprint being unloaded outside what was then the Evening Argus. That building is now Argus lofts.
Our last picture, taken in about 1936, is an Army recruiting office, we think in Waterloo Place, Brighton.
