TODAY we move into the 1930s, for some a time of poverty, slum housing and illnesses such as TB and diphtheria.
The richer classes, meanwhile, dressed up in their Sunday best for walks along the prom – check out the fur coats and stoles.
Also note how men kept their waistcoats and hats on while doing manual labour – as in this great picture of what was probably the demolition of the original Volk’s Station.
The Arlington Hotel in the background later became The Hungry Years then the Charles Street Tap.
How different shopping was in those days. The bustling scene pictured here was somewhere in Brighton but we are unclear which shop.
