A27 between Chichester and Emsworth to be closed for hours

A 25-year-old was killed and a teenager suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision between Chichester and Emsworth.

The pair were travelling eastbound along the A27 in a VW Golf at 11.40pm when the car was involved in a a crash.

The 25-year-old driver from Havant was pronounced dead at the scene and a 19-year-old man, also from Havant, suffered life-threatening injuries.

It is reported that the air ambulance was called to the scene, and the teenager has been taken to hospital for treatment.

The road has been closed throughout this morning as recovery and accident investigation work is undertaken.

And Highways England have now warned that the highway will remain shut long into the afternoon.

At noon, a spokesman said: "Investigation, recovery and collision clear-up work is ongoing on the A27.

"The road remains closed in both directions between Chichester and Emsworth. This closure is likely to remain in place for several more hours. Please allow extra journey time."

The service also provided details of the diversions in place to allow drivers to avoid the closed stretch of road.

The spokesman said: "Road-users wishing to continue their journey westbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol and exit the A27 just after Chichester at the Fishbourne Roundabout and join the A259 westbound towards towards Emsworth via Nutbourne.

"Continue on the A259 westbound to then rejoin the A27 at the Emsworth Intersection.

"Road-users wishing to continue their journey eastbound are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol and the above route, but in reverse."

Sussex Police are now appealing for witnesses as they look to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

A force spokesman said: "We are particularly interested to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of the collision or the Golf being driven prior to the collision.

"Police would also like to hear from the driver of a Red Audi A3 who may be able to assist with the investigation.
