THE A27 is closed both ways between Chichester and Emsworth following a "serious crash" this morning.
Emergency services remain at the scene of the collision and accident investigation work is under way.
A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "A section of the A27 is currently closed in both directions following an accident between Southbourne and Emsworth last night.
"Please avoid the area and take a different route.
"Teams from Chichester Fire Station and the heavy rescue tender from Worthing Fire Station, as well as the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police, attended."
A diversion is currently in place.
A Highways England spokesman said: "The A27 is closed in both directions between the A259 (near Chichester) and the A259 (near Emsworth) due to a serious collision.
"Full collision investigation work is under way. Once complete, vehicle recovery and collision clear-up work can begin.
"Road users wishing to continue their journey westbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle diamond diversion symbol and exit the A27 just after Chichester at the Fishbourne Roundabout and join the A259 westbound towards towards Emsworth via Nutbourne. Continue on the A259 westbound to then rejoin the A27 at the Emsworth Intersection.
"Road users wishing to continue their journey eastbound are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol and the above route, but in reverse.
"Please allow extra time for your journey, should you be travelling in the area."
Traffic reports state that the road has been closed since about 12.30am this morning.
