LEAFLETS have been sent to residents of Old Shoreham Road with the new proposed changes to cycle lanes and additions. A relative in that road passed one on to me. I would strongly advise all residents of Knoll Estate to obtain a copy as they have not been sent one. The effects on the estate are horrendous.
There would be no right turn out of Stapley Road into the Old Shoreham Road, Also no right turn into Stapley Road from Old Shoreham Road.
The effect of this means the only way into the Knoll Estate from Brighton direction is at the congested and polluted Portslade traffic lights into Hangleton Road.
Most vehicles will then treat Martin Road as a main road into and out of the estate.
The effect on ambulance and fire engine response times will be negative as they will need to come through the Portslade traffic light queues which will also be longer as all traffic to Knoll Estate will use a right hand turn at those lights. There will be queues in Martin Road in rush hour, school runs and other times too.
The traffic queue in Hangleton Road will likely back up past Martin Road causing issues to children using Hove Park School.
The changes will also stop buses coming on to Knoll Estate from Olive Road into Stapley Road.
The effect on Knoll Business park will be to have all vehicles using roads across the estate instead of just Bellingham Crescent causing issues into Wilfred Road, Godwin Road and Egmont Road.
On the Old Shoreham Road the front entrance to the business park will be impacted by increased traffic flows. Once the new estates are built at the top of King George V1 (Snakey Hill) leading into Hangleton Road, Hangleton village will be grid locked.
Anyone on Knoll Estate using the garages in English Close or visiting Hove Cemetery will only be able to return using the Portslade traffic lights into Hangleton Road. Traffic using the little Co-op further up will most likely turn right to use the residential roads as rat runs to Hangleton Road avoiding the traffic lights causing major issues to tiny roads and tight turnings.
I would not like to cycle those routes once the work is finished. At least children will be too scared to play in the residential streets, thereby avoiding accidents with vehicles.
The changes will also mean anyone going into Portslade town (main shopping area for Hangleton) from Knoll Estate or west towards Shoreham will have to use the congested and polluted Portslade traffic lights or drive past Hove Park School, around residential roads towards Sainsbury's and on to the Old Shoreham Road from the next set of traffic lights.
The proposals also seem rather lethal for the proposed cycle lanes and their users west of Hangleton Road.
